Rxg5+ wins
Though I’d really like 1. Ka2!? being the stating move giving white additional time for his king side attack (I like such moves) I fear the best continuation for white is the ‘loud’
1. Rxg5+!
Simple mates are
1. -, hxg5? 2. Qh8+, Kg6 3. Qh6# (or Rh6#)
1. -, Kf6? 2. Rf5+, Kg7 (Kg6 3. Qxf7#) 3. Rxf7+, Kg6 4. Qg8+
Best seems to be 1. -, Rg6.
In a real game I would play until here and search for a better win than the prosaic posted above (it’s always nice if one has a prosaic win so you can dangerlessly play the variation until now).
I calculated around 2. Nf5+ here but I do not see anything decicive after Kf6 but there is the prosaic line
2. Rxg6+, Kxg6 3. Rg1+, Kf6 (forced as Kh7 or Kh5 lead to mate after 4. Qxf7+)
and now simple (if there is nothing better, again we can play to this position and recalculate than without being in any danger) 4. Nxd5+ winning the queen and the end game.
Of course not 4. Rf1+?, Kg5!
Have I overseen anything?
Very nice analysis, Jochen!
If I’m not wrong, it’s just a check stream to a mate in 10.
1. Rxg5+ Rg6
2. Nf5+ Kf6 (… Rxf5 3. Rxg6+)
3. Rxg6+ Kxg6
4. Qe6+ Rf6
5. Rxh6+ Kxh6
6. Qxh6+ Kh5
7. Qh4+ Kg6
8. Qh6+ Kf7
9. Qg7+ Ke6
10. Qe7#
There’s (at least) a typo in my proposal:
6. Qxh6+ Kh5
Should have been:
6. Qxf6+ Kh5
If I’m not wrong, it’s just a check stream to a mate in 10.
1. Rxg5+ Rg6
2. Nf5+ Kf6 (… Rxf5 3. Rxg6+)
3. Rxg6+ Kxg6
4. Qe6+ Rf6
5. Rxh6+
5.Qg8#!
Jochen,
Tell me what happens after 4.Rf1+? Kg5! (your punctuation) if 5.Rxf7 winning for white as I see it.
ooops, 5… a2++
