Mayor Cup chess: Aleksandrov, Deviatkin begin with a bang

Top seed Aleksej Aleksandrov of Belarus and number two Andrei Deviatkin of Russia scored easy opening round victories over their Indian rivals as they began their campaigns with a bang in the 5th Mayor Cup International prize money chess tournament at the Chetna College today.

Playing with white pieces, Grand Master Aleksandrov (ELO 2606) defeated Atul Pende (ELO 1744) in 38 moves on board one while GM Deviatkin (ELO 2577) outsmarted Prasad Aurangabadkar (ELO 1742) by opting for a Caro-Cann defence after taking control on the 17th move.

On board 3, V M Rajeev (ELO 1740) blundered twice against 3rd seeded GM Nikolai Chadaev (ELO 2563) of Russia and went down in just 23 moves after preferring a Sicilian defense.
