by Brooklyn Eagle, published online 08-22-2011

On Wednesday, Aug. 17, Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz welcomed Brooklynites Gata Kamsky — the reigning United States Chess Champion and World Rapid Chess Champion — and three-time United States Woman’s Chess Champion Irina Krush for a visit to Borough Hall.

Kamsky is a native of Siberia who relocated to Brooklyn in 1989, attained the title of chess grandmaster and eventually graduated from Brooklyn College. Krush was born in Odessa, Ukraine, and came to Brooklyn with her parents in 1989, studying at Edward R. Murrow High School. At age 14, she became the youngest female champion ever when she captured the 1998 U.S. Women’s Chess Championship.
