The Malta Chess Open kicks off this Saturday at Stella Maris College in Gzira.

The annual competition attracts an interesting mix of experienced players and newcomers together with a good number of foreign residents and tourists. Last year the winner was Nicola Vozza from Italy followed by Swede player Alexander Pettersson. Third placed and best local player was Oliver Said.

German Andreas Comtesse won the “Best Unrated” award.

The competition, organised by the Malta Chess Federation, is played over seven rounds and comes to an end on January 30.
