1.Rxg6+ and black gets mated
YEpp, 1.Rxg6+ looks good.
I think you’re right (if I did not mascalculate as I found the same starting move) but did you look at all the lines?
1. Rxg6+
The obvious answer 1. -, Kxg6 gives a quick mate after 2. Qd3/e4+, Kg7 3. Qh7+, Kf8 4. Qh8#
but Kxg6 is not forced.
1. -, Kf8 of course is no alternative as Qf3+ simply mates (though I like the sweet 2. e6! more which mates, too) but what about 1. -, Kh8!?
Took me some time and I think white has to find the silent move 2. Qe4 (or Qd3) here threatening Rg8+ (or Rh6+) e.g.
1. Rxg6+, Kh8!? 2. Qe4!, e6 (Qa7+ 3. Kg2 doesn’t help) 3. Rh6+, Kg8 4. Qg6+, Qg7 5. Qxe8+ (1:0)
Or is there something easier?
Best wishes
Jochen
That all looks good to me, Jochen.
to Jochen:
not easier, but a altenative
…
2. Qf3 (threatening Qxh5#) Qb6
3. Rxb6 Rxb6
4. Qxh5+ Rh6
5. Qxh6+ Kg8
6. Qh7+ Kf8
7. Qh8#
I like
1. Rxg6+, Kh8 2. Ne6 threatening 3. Qh6#.
So
2. … Nf7 3. Qf3 with mate threatened via 4. Qxh5.
Black cannot avoid the mate now.
oops the last line has a hole in it.
2. … Qb6 pinning the queen when white only gets a draw.
