Clever marketing of chess960 by Herr Schmitt.
Schmitt is marketing the Chess Tigers’ annual August event, which is unique in the world due to its size and creativity.
Schmitt is also marketing chess960 itself. Grandmaster chess960 games in Mainz have proven that robust opening principles, principles that work for any of the 960 start positions (instead of just the one), are unknown or poorly understood even by the best players.
Chess960 provides the last large area of chess that has yet to be studied and understood. Morphy understood the opening phase in traditional “chess1” better than Kramnik and Topalov understand the opening phase in chess960.
Where else in chess is there any huge neglected area left for humanity to learn fundamental aspects of these pieces on this board?
