How do you rank this phenom? Will he be just as good as Fischer or Kasparov?

He’s better!
I’m not yet ready to call him the next Ponomariov, a former world champion, but with a lot of work, he can be the next Ponomariov.
Let’s not insult the kid. He’s 2700 in the next rating list and he’s just 15. He’s no Pono. He’s superman!
GM’s with talent like Kasparov and Fischer dont come along very often, maybe once in a lifetime. Both Garry and Bobby were exceptionally gifted, motivated, had the tremendous will to win and other intangibles like having a feel of what is right instinctively on the chessboard in any given situation and the the ability to go up a level when their opponent was in trouble. Plus I believe possibly Garry and definetly Bobby have photographic memories. So far Magnus is a phenom, but to compare hime with the Games two best players of all time is premature in my opinion.

I disagree. Carlsen’s progress is just as great as both Fischer’s and Kasparov’s were.
Comparing him with Pono isn’t right either, I think Carlsen is way ahead of him.
Carlsen wouldn’t stand a chance at any of our open tournaments. I rate him as 2450 max. As we know from past discussions, the FIDE (USCF) ratings are inflated tremendously, for showing-off purposes and attracting sponsors.

Magnus will be World Champ for sure, if he takes 100 lessons from Susan, who knows what is necessary to become one!
Magnus sure is promising. We will see what influence girls and beer will have in the year to come!?

I just got home from the hospital, I had surgery. But it doesn’t seem that I’m the one drugged here. You can’t possibly be serious with that statement? If you are, I pity you.
I think Carlsen shows more promise than Ponomariov did at the same age. Whether he will turn into a Fischer or a Kasparov depends on intangibles that none of us can predict. A player of that calibre comes along once in a generation, and it will be a long while before we know if Carlsen is such a player. The only thing we can say is that he clearly has the raw material.
Carlsen gained mastery of the game through studying on his own. Not urged on by his parents, nor tutored by the Russian school of chess.
He has a photographic memory and perhaps the biggest chess talent in 20 years, but chess is not his first priority.

I dont think Magnus is going to be another Gormally, getting drunk and punching someone out over a pretty chess player.

You dont win championships by going out every night drinking between games. then trying to play all hung over the next day.
Susan in 2004 how many nights out on the town were the winning women’s team. I will bet there were none. that they were getting a good night’s rest for the game the next day.
The US Women’s Team in 2004 was not allowed to drink or party during the Olympiad. I personally did not go to the Olympiad to have fun. I went to there with a goal.
I do not believe there was such rule for the US team prior to 2004.

I think (supported by math analysis of his elo trend) Magnus is going to reach 2700+ chess rating even before Sergej Karjakin!
And after that mark ,everything in chess can happen.
Probably we are witnessing the rise of a new World Chess Champ,who will rule for decades. I definitely hope so.
