Grandmaster Eugene Torre turned back the hands of time by capturing the Battle of Grandmasters National Chess Championship yesterday at the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) dining hall.

Torre, 63, defeated International Master Paulo Bersamina with the white pieces to finish with 23 points, half a point ahead of GM John Paul Gomez.

Gomez halved the point with International Master Jan Emmanuel Garcia to place second while Bersamina took third with 19.5 points.

The tournament served as an elimination tournament for two slots to the Philippine team in the World Chess Olympiad in Oslo Norway.

Torre, however, said their inclusion will still depend on National Chess Federation of the Philippines (NCFP) president Butch Pichay.

Rounding out the standings:

WIM Janelle Mae Frayna 18, GM Darwin Laylo 18, IM Emmanuel Garcia 18, GM Joey Antonio 18, GM Banjo Barcenilla 16.5, IM Oliver Dimakiling 15, GM Richard Bitoon 15, NM Roel Abelgas 7.5, and IM Joel Pimentel 7.

WIM Catherine Perena topped the women’s event with 25.5 points with WNM Christy Bernales placing second with 24 points and WFM Cherry Ann Mejia with 22.5.
