1 Rxg7 threatening Rh7#
if
1 … Rxg7
2 Re8+ Rg8
3 Qxg8#
if
1 … Rg6
2 Rxg6 Rxg6
3 Qxg6 … etc
leaves white a rook up. The g2 pawn looks dangerous, but isn’t after queens are off.
There’s a latent mate threat with the rook and bishop on h7. If only that g7 pawn were gone. We’d like to try Qh6 hg, but the R/f6 stops that. So Bg6! enables that move, and now Rxg6 fxg6 followed by Qh5+ seems like an unstoppable route to mate.
@The Mad Hatter,
After Rxg7 Rxg7
Re8+ then not Rg8 it will be Bxe8
Correct answer 1.Bg6 ..
2.Qh6+ gxh6
3.Rh7#
Bg6 threatening Qh6+
If gxQ then Rh7 mate.
Bg6 threatening Qh6+
If gxQ then Rh7 mate.
Mad Hatter, you fortgot 2…Bxe8
1.Bg6 threatens 2.Qh6
IF 1…Rgf8 2.h6 Rxg6 3.hxg7+ Kg8 4.gxf8=Q+ Rxf8 seems to be a winning position for white
After 1. Bg6 White is threatening 2. Qh6+ gxh6 3. Rh7#
The best Black can do, other than 1. .. Resigns is:
1. .. Qf4 2. Qxf4 Rxf4 3. Rxd7 and Black is a piece down.
Other tries are:
1. .. Rxg6 2. hxg6 and Black is getting mated along the h-file by the queen, or on g7: 2. .. Rb8 3. Qh5+ Kg8 4. Qh7+ Kf8 5. Qxg7#
1. .. Rd8 2. Be8 Rg6 (2. .. Rf7 3. Rxf7 Qh6 4. Rf8+ Kh7 5. Bg6+ Qxg6 6. hxg6#) 3. hxg6 Qxe7 4. Qh5+ Kg8 5. Qh7+ Kf8 6. Qh8#
R1e6!!
When someone spots the right move and then, unlike Istratescu, sidesteps (by Rg8-f8) the immediate threat, I think it is quite tricky to spot the rest of the conclusion, but I won’t spoil the fun…
Bg6 threatening Qh6
Bg6! ends everything. Blocking the R for Qh6+, gxh6 and Rh7#.
No defense.
Okay, now i see what Kevin O means: better is after Bg6, Rgf8, but then h6 will be devestating. Threatening mate on all fronts and i believe that even if black gives up material, mate is inevitable.
…h6, Rxg6 (what else? Qf4 maybe?), hxg7+, Kg8, gxf8Q+, Kxf8 and now Qh8+, Rg8, Qh7. Or something like that. Too complex from here on for me, analyzing at the board, but after gxf8Q+ (all forced i think) i would see it clearly. ;-))
1. Bg6!
Threats Qh6+ gxh6 Rh7#.
1. … Rxg6
Enforced. Rg8 can’t go because of Qxg7#. There is no g6 now, and the alternatives was Qxe7 Rxe7 which is worse.
2. Qxg6 Qxg6
3. hxg6
is nicely up with quality (2R vs R+B) and wins easily!
Bg6 and then queen sac -> mate
Bg6 with Queen sacrifice
How careless of me to overlook 1. .. Rgf8. But this is an effective way to deal with it:
1. Bg6 Rgf8 2. h6 Rxg6 (2. .. Qf4 3. hxg7+ Kg8 4. Bh7+ Kxh7 5. g8=Q#) 3. hxg7+ Kg8 4. gxf8=Q+ Kxf8 5. Qh5
threatening back-rank mate with 6.Qh8#, and Black cannot protect against it with 5. .. Rg8 due to 6. Qf7#
5. .. Qxe7 6. Rxe7 Kxe7 7. Qxg6
