Chess champions celebrate birthday
Chess clubs Reykjanesbaer and Hrókurinn will celebrate the 50th birthday of Icelandic chess champion Helgi Ólafsson with an international chess tournament on Sunday.
Ten grand masters of chess will participate in the international tournament, which will be broadcast live on TV channel Sýn. Morgunbladid reports.
Participants include, apart from Helgi Ólafsson himself, grand masters Jóhann Hjartarson, Margeir Péturson, Ivan Sokolov, Hendrik Danielsen and Lenka Ptacnikova.
Ásmundur Fridriksson, project organizer of Reykjanesbaer, told Morgunbladid that additionally to celebrating Ólafsson’s birthday, the goal with the tournament is to support the work of Reykjanesbaer Chess Club.
