HANOI — Vietnamese Grandmasters Le Quang Liem and Nguyen Ngoc Truong Son qualified for the second round of the ongoing World Chess Cup 2011 in Khanty Mansiysk, Russia on Monday.

Liem took the first game against Indonesian rival Megaranto Susanto, leaving him needing just a draw to qualify for the next round. Susanto, forced to go for the win in the second game, was unable to overcome the unflappable Liem, who kept his cool to secure the draw and an overall 1.5-0.5 victory.

The two time winner of the Aeroflot Open will meet Russia’s Boris Grachev today.

Meanwhile, his teammate Son beat Li Chao of China by the same score to set up a second round clash with Russia’s Peter Svidler, who is seeded nine.

In other news, 18th seed Peter Leko of Hungary made a shock exit with defeat to the unknown Sameul Shankland from the US.

In the women’s competition, Hou Yifan of China lost to Armenia’s Sergei Movsesian 0-2, while Hungary’s Judit Polgar defeated Cuba’s Fidel Corrales Jimenez 2-0 to move to the second round.

Players from 46 countries and territories are taking part in the competition. — VNS
