Lewis Chessmen set for return to Scotland – on tour
Mar 28 2009
PIECES from a controversial medieval chess collection are to return to Scotland – but only for a visit.
Around 25 of the 12th century Lewis Chessmen will be put on show at venues in Edinburgh and Stornoway.
The 78 figures were discovered on a beach on Stornoway in 1831.
Most are kept at the British Museum in London, although the Scottish government want them returned.
Yesterday, it was confirmed the museum are taking the pieces on tour. But they denied the move was prompted by pressure from Holyrood.

When will it be returned? Will it be in some museums?
