Many of you have asked me about the current silly game that is being played between Kramnik, Topalov and their teams.

This is my take.

As I have said before, I considered Kramnik a World Champion after he defeated Garry Kasparov (even though he did not qualify to play Garry, Shirov was). I had a problem with Kramnik ducking a rematch at all costs. One who had an opportunity to play for the World Championship crown the way he did should be thankful and humble. It was in the best interest of chess to have the rematch.

Let’s fast forward to current time. Kramnik was invited to San Luis. He declined while other top players showed up to battle. When you add that with his recent disastrous results including his unconvincing tie against Leko, Kramnik does not have much of a leverage.

If I was him, I would be the first to publicly congratulate Topalov. I would also give Topalov time to enjoy his glory. Then I would have my team contact Topalov’s team quietly and in a professional manner. Kramnik had 5 years of glory! Topalov does not even have 5 weeks before the attacks and insults started to fly.

What the Kramnik team did with the press release was unprofessional. He is under so much pressure for not being able to perform well lately and he is going after the sympathy strategy from his fans. That is fine but don’t play this childish macho game.

I am also disappointed in Topalov’s team as well. Because the other side fired the first shot, they retaliated with their own insults by pointing out Kramnik’s rating, ranking and results. That is also uncalled for. Then comes FIDE with more gasoline to put out the fire.

Gentlemen! Can we all grow up and start acting more professionally? Kids do look up to us and we are supposed to be role models for the next generation. We are having a tough enough time finding consistent sponsors. Do we need to tarnish the reputation of chess even further?

Maybe we need a woman to fix all the men’s problems? Maybe we should have all of them locked up in a room with no food, water and toilet facility until they can come up with a resolution. All kidding aside, I really hope that both sides will change their tunes for the benefit of chess. We all expect more from two World Champions. Posted by Picasa
