LOS ANGELES (April 6) – Charlton Heston, who won the 1959 best actor Oscar as the chariot-racing “Ben-Hur” and portrayed Moses, Michelangelo, El Cid and other heroic figures in movie epics of the ’50s and ’60s, has died. He was 84.
Did you watch any of his movies? If yes, which was your Charlton Heston favorite movie? By the way, Mr. Heston was also a chess player. He was on his high school chess team.
Chess Daily News from Susan Polgar
My favorite of his was “The Omega Man”, which is better than its recent remake “I Am Legend.”
Midway!
Charlton Heston movies that I recommend include:
10 Commandments
Ben Hur
Planet of the Apes
Soylent Green
Here is Mr. Heston at the chessboard in the 1971 film ‘The Omega Man”:

I heard a great story once about how Charlton Heston met Bobby Fischer on a plane. (Heston told the story himself. It’s apparently true!)
Heston was playing chess against a computer while waiting for his flight. (I assume it was one of those old Chess Challengers that people were selling for outrageous prices back in the 70’s.) Anyway, his position was dreadful, and Fischer looked over his shoulder and told him so in no uncertain terms. Heston smiled and said, “Well, is my position so bad that you couldn’t win it?” There was a pause, and Fischer finally said, “Well…maybe not THAT bad…” and he grabbed the computer away from Heston and beat it.
Prediction:
In the next day or two,
The Onion will have a headline similar to:
Coroner pries semi-automatic weapon from Heston’s cold dead hands.
the movie i would recomend with him, is Bowling for Columbine
Thank you Mr. Heston for protecting my 2nd Amendment Rights!
You are a true American hero!
FEAR THE GOVERNMENT THAT FEARS YOUR GUNS!!!
That Hollywood era could somehow be revived, but who could replace a Charlton Heston?
My favorite Charlton Heston movie is “Khartoum”, although I have to admit he’s outdone by Laurence Olivier.
My favorite Charlton Heston story also involves Laurence Olivier, though the language isn’t suitable for a family blog.
Planet of the Apes when he said Keep your stinking paws off me ape!
As predicted:
The Onion – Heston
El Cid still remains one of my favorite classics of all his movies. RIP.
“Ben Hur” is clearly the best. Plus, it has an outstanding soundtrack by Miklos Rozsa, a serious composer who “went Hollywood.” Of course, he also did the El Cid soundtrack which several others mentioned as a favorite.
