It’s time for Viswanathan Anand to quit, says Lanka Ravi

HYDERABAD: “It’s time to call it quits,” is former Asian rapid chess champion Lanka Ravi’s word of advice for India’s top Grand Master Viswanathan Anand.
The 47-year-old Anand suffered one of his worst defeats as he crashed out in the second round of the Chess World Cup 2017 in Tbilisi, Georgia a few days ago.
The defeat not only means that Anand has lost the opportunity to contest in the next World Championships but also raised several questions on his future as he lost to a player almost half of his age – 27-year-old Canadian GM Anton Kovalyov.
Speaking to TOI on Monday, International Master Ravi was frank in his opinion: “In fact, Anand should have announced his retirement after his second successive defeat to world No.1 Magnus Carlsen of Norway in the World Championship final in 2014. Age is showing in Anand’s performance in recent times and his career graph has clearly shown a decline in the last few months,” Ravi, who was a former national rapid champion, said.
