Latvian champion Igor Kovalenko finished in clear first place at the 2013 edition of the Polugaevsky Memorial, which took place on 2 – 10 July in the Russian region of Samara. This tournament was the 6th stage of this year’s Cup of Russia.

Kovalenko had an impressive performance as he obtained 8 points in the 9 rounds in a field with many strong Grandmasters both local and from abroad.

Four players arrived one point behind the Latvian. Russian GMs Dmitry Bocharov and Vladimir Fedoseev got second and third place, respectively.

The lucky winners took home the following amount of money (in rubles): 1st – 150.000; 2nd – 80.000; 3rd – 60.000.

A big field of 138 participants proved the popularity of chess in the region of Samara.
