Absolutely amazing!
1.Ng3+ Kh6 2.Nf5+ Kh7 3.Rg7+! Kh8 4.Nxe3 Kxg7 5.Nxc5 and white should have a technical win I think.
I originally thought the following line would be a draw because white only has two knights:
1. Ng3+ Kh6
2. Nf5+ Kh7
3. Rg7+ Kh8
4. NxB KxR
5. Nf5+ K/any
6. NxR cxd4
7. Kxd4
Then, I cheated a little bit by search google for knight endings, and came to the following page:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Two_knights_endgame
It appears, this would be a win for White because Black has the two pawns (they are doubled, so they act as a single pawn, only worse because they prevent a stalemate).
Haven’t worked out the solution though… at least not yet. Would need to understand the Troitsky line first.
1. Ng3+ Kh6
2. Nf5+ Kh7
3. Rg7+ Kh8
4. N:e3 K:h7
5. N:c5 and now if the R moves to a white square it gets taken immediately, and if it moves to a black square it gets picked up by a Knight fork. 2N vs. a pawn (or, in this case, isolated pawns) is a win for the Knights if the pawns are insufficiently far advanced. But, much like mating with a B+N vs. lone K, I’m glad I don’t have to do it with my life at stake.
Unless Black marches his K up the board in his first few moves, white just picks off the B and, with the black K confined to the h-file, I presume the win is pretty easy.
It’s impossible for White to win this. 2 knights can’t checkmate.
Knight checks on g3 and then f5, winning rook for knight. With the black K cut off by the white R, the white K and other N should be able to mop up the pawns.
2 knights and a rook CAN mate. Look again.
But white has the rook. I’m just trying to figure out how to get the knight across the board without leaving an opening for black’s rook and bishop to cause mayhem.
Here is a possible sequence:
1. Ng3+ Kh6
2. Nf5+ Kh7
3. Rg7+ Kh8
4. Re7
and white wins the bishop
