White is fighting for his life here – I haven’t found the correct defence yet 🙂
it says 0-1, so no chance.
a4 is ok. pass pawn Soon.
1. kc4 kf5
2. a4 e5
3. b5 e4
4. c6 e3
5. c7 e2
6. c8+ wins
1. kc4 kf5
2. a4 e5
3. b5 e4
4. c6 bxc6
5. b6 e3
6. b7 e2
7. b8+ wins
1. kc4 ke5
2. a4 ke6
3. b5 kd7
4. kd5 I think white gets a protected passed pawn with any black plan
if white starts with
1. a4 kd5 black is better
1 Kc4 is the right start, but black has a better defense and then the position is even. for example:
1 Kc4 e5
2 a4 Kf4 (avoiding white’s promotion with check)
3 b5 axb5+
4 axb5 e4
5 c6 bxc6
6 bxc6 e3
7 c7 e2
8 c8Q e1Q

How about 5.b6! instead? Queens with check.
Black must play 2. -, Kf3 instead of Kf5 or Kf4 to avoid queening with check.
Seems that white has nothing else then Kc4 if he wants to have any chance to win. If he allows black to play Kd5 it is (at least) draw.
Black now needs 6 moves to promote the pawn (one king move to f3, f4 or f5, 5 pawn moves) white needs 5. It is black to move so he will queen directly after white queened. Only thing black has to avoid white’s pawn queening with check.
The variations posted above show that Kf4 and Kf5 lose, while 1. Kc4, Kf3?? loses, too, of course because of Kd5 (it’s a thing of counting what happens after Ke3 and so on).
So 1. -, e5 is the only move for black if he wants to queen at the same time as white. Other try is Ke5 as pointed out by anonymous.
All things regarded until now lead to the “simple” draw with 1. -, e5! 2. a4, Kf3!
The only black’s winning chance is 1. -, Ke5. But it looks as if white got at least an easy draw playing c6!? perhaps even more by playing a4 (I am not quite sure here).
So I’d say Ke5 is a risk which does not bring any better chances so black should go for the draw with e5! and Kf3!
Good analyis, bill, mayadi and rest, but why did no one look at Kf3!?
Rybka on ply 32 gives:
32 0.00 7.9M 3:22.99 Kc4 e5 a4 Kf3 b5 axb5+ axb5 e4 c6 bxc6
dead draw (notice Kf3)
