Hamilton club’s tourney lets kids check masterful mates

Players sat hunched over chess boards, fingers at their temples, as they waged a battle of strategy.

Little more than the tick-tock of the clock and the punching of a timer – signalling a move had been made – could be heard.

For some, the weekend Hamilton Chess Club’s Winter Open was a way to enjoy a serious hobby.

For others, it was a chance to hone their skills, develop new tactics and compete for a title.

Nine-year-old Tibi Andronescu, of Burlington wasn’t expecting to win the title in this 48-person tournament, but it was another competition to add to his ever-growing list. The young boy, who has been playing chess since his grandfather taught him when he was five, spends up to an hour every night working on his game.

His dad, Madi, says Tibi ‘s skill far exceeds his when he was that age.
