After 1. Nd7, Black may be able to defend with 1…Qa8. I think that 1. Ng6 is better. The idea is the same, but now 1….Qa8 can be met by trading rooks and checking on d5, with mate to follow. (The point is that with the White knight on g6, the Black king can’t escape to h8.)
1. Ng6! Ra8!
2. Qe6+ Qf7
3. Ne7+ Kf8
4. Qd6 Nc4 is not over yet.
Neighter is 2. Re7 Qc6
Indeed, solving the problem is not just one move as so often is tried here:
1. Ng6! Ra8
2. Ne7+! Kh8
3. Qe6 and the threat of Ng6+ followed by Rh3 mate is killing.
