MOSCOW — Garry Kasparov answered his cell phone in an elevator Friday afternoon, and his expression froze.
The 44-year-old chess grandmaster, locked in the political match of his life with Russian President Vladimir Putin, was told that prosecutors had instructed him to come in on Saturday.
Kasparov’s aggressive style on the chessboard and his refusal to settle for a draw earned him a series of world championships. But he is aware that a blunder in this struggle with the Kremlin could cost him dearly.
“It’s getting dangerous,” he said as his driver weaved through Moscow traffic. “We have to be careful.”
An aide, Marina Litvinovich, later said prosecutors probably weren’t preparing criminal charges, adding that they might be reacting to a request from lawmakers for an investigation into Kasparov’s detention at an anti-Putin rally in Moscow a week ago.
But the call was a chilling reminder of the risks he faces.

He’s crazy!
I hope he doesn’t wind up like Politikovskaya.
Yes, something is wrong with Kaspa. Without chess, he is living his life the same way he played chess, taking risks and sacrificing pieces. The problem is that this time he could be the sacrificed piece.
If the previous poster thinks that by taking risks and standing up for something you believe in is crazy then I can only shake my head.
Where would we get to in the world if people didn’t stand up for what they though was right, without regard for their own safety?

William Wallace is a great example. Without him Scotland would never have been freed.
Thanks Niall!
He is not only crazy, it is simply stupid to fight this way against such opponents.
the story is not ended yet…
Kaspy always calculates his moves. Don’t worry I saw his moves before, and I thought he was crazy also, but he won the game.
I don’t know if he is wright or not, but he calculates his move.

Great site! Let’s hope Kasparov succeeds in pushing democracy back to surface in Russia. Garry’s sucked Putin in … soon it will be time for him to strike back.
