Here are the comments from Mamedyarov about Topalov when asked:
Q: Could you please tell me what is your attitude about the fact that FIDE does not allow Topalov from participating in the World Championship [in Mexico]?
I think Topalov should be allowed to compete in the top eight. The reason is because Topalov for a year a year and a half was the top player in the world and he won many of the big tournaments. And it is my opinion that this gives him the right to be in the final eight. However, we of course know that it’s not up to us to decide. We will just have to see how things will turn out. I don’t know the solution but I think that Topalov deserves to be there. I think he is one of the strongest chess players in the world.
Here are the comments from Karpov about this matter:
Topalov´s absence in the next World Championship cycle is scandalously absurd. But we have to remind ourselves of how these strange rules came up. They decided after San Luis by those same people of FIDE that went according to the decisions of Danailov and Topalov. They thought that after the magnificent results of Topalov in 2005, Kramnik simply would not have any chance to win. This was designed to get rid of him definitively. They invented these rules, according to which one of the participants of the match in Elista would not be allowed to play in the following cycle. There is a wonderful Russian proverb: “Do not dig a hole for somebody else, you yourself will fall into it”. This exact situation was what happened with Topalov and Danailov. They dug a hole to for Kramnik, but they were those who fell in it.
What do you think about their comments? What is your take?
Karpov I love you guy! The first one to say it like it is! It is of course absurd, that one of the strongest players is not allowed to play in San Luis this year, but in case of the fakt, how this rule of not participating in it after losing the match (Kramnik-Topalov) it is just fair that Topalov has to stay outside.

Of course, from the logical point of view it is absourd, that one of the strongest players is not allowed to participate in the WCT this year. But in case of the reason, why this rule was desigend, it is just fair now, to leave Topalov out!
>>I think Topalov should be allowed to compete in the top eight. >>
This is very bizarre. He doesn’t want to create a 9th place. Nooo, instead he wants to eliminate one of the existing 8 spots, and so cut some unnamed person out of their duly earned place.
Which one? Does he want to cancel a couple of the Candidates Matches and say “So sorry, we’ve given the spot you’re competing for to Topalov”?
If you want Topalov in, the only fair thing is still to replace Kramnik, and let the winner of Mexico play a match with him for the whole ball of wax.
And we wouldn’t be having this discussion at all if Topalov hadn’t gotten stupidly overconfident, and gambled his spot in this cycle on the Elista match. He should never have agreed to that.
Something’s wrong with this blog? First i posted a statement that disappeared than i wrote a second one, and now both a there…?
I believe the comments are held a short time due to the moderation that is in effect.

Out of the Ether
Topalov had many choices
He took the money
He should be quiet
Why is Mamedyarov not rated at the moment?

I guess it must be a minor dispute between the Azerbaijan chess organisation and FIDE.
^^ we have the same proverb in german:
“Wer anderen eine Grube gräbt, fällt selbst hinein!”
to my best knowledge – the english expression is:
“Harm set, harm get!”
so, i’m rooting for WCC GM Anatoli Karpov this time (…something very unusual to me, an elderly amateur chess player remembering the great times of a GM Robert J.Fischer – only friends and patzers called him “Bobby”, a Victor – the Terrible – Korchnoi and Gary – the one and only – Kasparov…)
^^
Bravo, Karpov!
“There is a wonderful Russian proverb: “Do not dig a hole for somebody else, you yourself will fall into it”. This exact situation was what happened with Topalov and Danailov. They dug a hole to for Kramnik, but they were those who fell in it.”
It’s no wonder they created that phony cheating scandal once the match started to go against them. They were probably in a state of panic. The one thing that could foil the whole plan was in the process of happening.
Karpov said it right. Topalov’s absence from the championship is ridiculous, but it is his manager’s doing, so he has no right to complain.
I guess this proverb exists in every language. In polish: Kto drugiemu dziure kopie, sam do niej wpada!
A short story: Kramnik 1 – 0 Topalov :-))
A short story: Kramnik 1 – 0 Topalov :-))
An another short story: Kramnik – Aronian 0 – 1 :))
Kramnik did not succeed to defend his “indisputable” excellence. Topalov can beat Kramnik whenever he wishes.
Topalov’s absence is a terrible mistake. The cheating slanders are still unproved and insulting. Who could be a believer in this calumny? Karpov is not.
I’m sorry because of my English. It is very poor.
>>An another short story: Kramnik – Aronian 0 – 1 :))>>
And Aronian is in the Candidates, so what are you kicking about?
We should show some kindness to Topalov. He should be allowed to play.
We should show some kindness to Topalov. He should be allowed to play.
That’s the an elementary truth!
“… a year a year and a half …”
so many errors for two articles.
This proverb is probably used by every nation which has been influenced by the Bible. cf Proverbs of Solomon 26.27. Also Psalm 7.16 and parallels.
As I wrote “A short story: Kramnik 1 – 0 Topalov” i meant the politics and not the match of them. Topalov (for sure it was Danailov) wanted to rule Kramnik out in the next WCT but now he is the one that suffer.
Be it as it may, I think it is a shame Topalov, one of the strongest and exciting chess players in the world is not taking part in the World Championship. However, I think a match between two should decide the title and not a tournament. After the Aronian match it appears Kramnik’s days are numbered and we may have a new World Champion sooner than later. In my lifetime the most dominant World Champion ever was Bobby Fischer first, from 1970-1972 no one could touch him, and then Karpov and Kasparov were very dominant during their time.
It is FIDE’s responsibility to maintain the integrity of the title of World Champion. By setting the candidates’ tournament and then shoehorning in the Topalov-Kramnik match without adjusting the terms of the tournament, they created the mess. This is equivalent to changing the playoff system in a *real* professional sports league (by real, I mean professionally run) while the regular season is in progress.
Whoever wins the WC will have a star beside their name simply because not all legitimate contenders were able to contest it. For Karpov to blame T and D for FIDE’s screw up is just silly.

It is not, because it was Danailov, that has the idea to forebid the loser of the match Kramnik-Topalov to participate in the next WC cycle. A contract was designed and all parties accepted it: So did Kramnik, so did FIDE and Topalov of course. Now FIDE can do nothing but let it run like the contract was signed back 2005!
The failer of FIDE in this case was to allow such a contract designed by Danailov. It was absurd alredy then. But today is everythink fine and Danailov can see hwo stupid and arrogant his acting was!
I would have to agree with Karpov, the Elista rules (and the events of the match) showed that they were really playing for keeps – no quarter asked nor given.
It has been said that the things that happened there were far murkier than the events of the Karpov-Korchnoi matches of the 70’s and 80’s and I think this might be true.
Topalov already has a consolation prize in any case – if Kramnik wins Mexico this year Topalov gets an automatic match against him in 2008.
I am not certain Kramnik would have gotten so lenient a treatment had he not win in Elista.
The contract (whether or not is was drawn up by Danailov) was AGREED to by BOTH parties and applied equally to both parties, so I cannot see how we can proclaim it ‘unfair’ or even harsh after the fact, especially considering both players were willing to bear the consequences of their decision. In any case Topalov and Kramnik are equal on the ratings charts right now and it would be no better to have Kramnik excluded. One should not forget that he is a dragon slayer of the highest calibre and a modern day Capablanca
