Galva, Kan. –

Nearly every Saturday during the school year, students ranging from kindergarten through High School pack up their chess sets, chessboards, and chess clocks and travel to one of the many schools throughout Kansas that are members of the Kansas Scholastic Chess Association. There they compete in the oldest board game in the world – chess.

Last Saturday, it was Canton-Galva’s turn to host a scholastic tournament.Area schools, Canton-Galva Middle School, K-5, and Eisenhower Elementary of McPherson, won trophies at the Canton-Galva Scholastic Chess Tournament.

About 70 students from schools throughout Kansas competed in the daylong event. The Eisenhower Elementary team won second place, losing to Sunrise Christian Academy, who took home the first place trophy.

The Canton-Galva Middle School team took third place in the statewide event. “I’m extremely proud of our students,” said Marck Cobb, president of the International Chess Institute of the Midwest (ICIM), which operates the well-known Anatoly Karpov International School of Chess in Lindsborg.

Included in the area schools, whose students received instruction from the Karpov Chess School, was Saint Mary’s Grade School in Salina. They won the second place K-3 trophy.

“It is always gratifying to see these young people compete in a game that improves their concentration and cognitive abilities,” said Tom Brownscombe, director of the Karpov Chess School.
