Camaguey, Cuba, Friday, 01 April 2011

Havana, Cuba, Apr 1.- Ukrainian chess star Vassily Ivanchuk will be one of the participants in the 46th Capablanca Memorial scheduled for May 10-22 in the Cuban capital.

Ivanchuk, the defending champion and who has won the annual tournament on four occasions, places fifth in the world ranking of the International Chess Federation (FIDE) with an ELO rating of 2779 points —the highest of all participants this year.

Another top player who will be competing in the Elite Group of the contest is Czech David Navara, ranked 22nd in the world with 2722 points of ELO rating.

According to Osvaldo Diaz, head of the National Chess Commission, the tournament will probably reach the Category 19th level for the first time as the average ELO rating will be over 2700.

The other foreign players included in the Elite Group are world youth champion Dmitry Andreikin (2686) of Russia, and Vietnamese Quan Liem Le (2689), the highest-ranked player of this Asian nation.

Cuba will be represented by Latin American’s best-ranked player, Leinier Dominguez (2716), and by Lazaro Bruzon (2686). In the case of these two players, with their performances at the recently concluded Zonal 2.3 World Cup regional qualifier held in the Dominican Republic -where they topped the standings and secured tickets for the World Cup later this year in Russia-, they added 9.5 and 7.1 units, respectively, to their personal ELO ratings to be updated on May 1.(ACN)
