Vassily Ivanchuk Defends Title in Capablanca-2017 Chess Tournament

Varadero, Cuba, May 27 (Prensa Latina) Ukrainian Grand Master (GM) Vassily Ivanchuk starts today defending the title of the Jose Raul Capablanca Inmemoriam International Chess Tournament, that will end on next June 6.
Ivanchuk, champion in 2005, 2006, 2007, 2010, 2011, 2012 and 2016, will be today competing against other GMs such as Peruvian Emilio Cordova, Indian Krishnan Sasikiran, US Samuel Shankland, Polish Kasper Piorun and host Isam Ortiz.

The Ukrainian Grand Master, who is currently placed on 24th place in the world ranking with 2,732 points, intends to improve his performance in the previous round, when he totaled seven points, thanks to four wins and six draws.

Generally speaking, Ivanchuk played 81 matches with 32 wins, 45 draws and only four defeats by Poland’s Kamil Miton in 2006, Cuban Lazaro Bruzon in 2011, Spaniard Paco Vallejo and Hungarian Zoltan Almasy, both in 2014.

During the 52nd edition of the tournament, the Ukrainian GM will not have as opponents the three main Cuban chess players, GM Leinier Dominguez, Lazaro Bruzon and Yuniesky Quesada.
