There are 21 players on 2/2 in Liverpool. Several favourites dropped points though – Etienne Bacrot (FRA, 2691) and Sergei Tiviakov (NED, 2645) drew their games in round 2, while Nigel Short (2655) lost when his mobile phone rang during the game!
As we reported in CT a few days earlier, GM Malakhov suffered a similar loss in the Russian Higher League. One should always make sure that a mobile phone is off. Maybe disconnecting its batteries is the best remedy for this problem!

Is it soo hard to turn off the Cell-phone when entering the tournament hall? How can you forget that?
Shouldn’t that be standing operating procedure like brushing your teeth in the morning?
How stupid are people really?
BTW, … Short deserves it….
Idiot!
I have read that Short did indeed turn off the phone, but it beeped, indicating a low battery. It seems to me that a low-bat beep is not the equivalent of “ringing”, but I don’t make the rules.
A turned off phone doesn’t ring because of low battery. He put the phone on vibration and that clearly should be illegal as he can get signals using a “vibration” code.
Bigger problem: many phones can run chess programs. If phones are allowed to be carried on person, a player can visit the restroom, turn on the phone and run the program.

Yes, Danailov has programmed Topa’s butt plug in the same way.
my phone wakeup alarm goes off when my phone is turned off, as well as when the battery is low.
This is nothing new, it happened many times before.
I wonder why the players even bring their phones to the playing hall. Are they expecting an urgent call or something? Even if they are, how are they going to take that call???
So why bring something to the game when you know you won’t be able to use it? And what about that book? Did Nigel plan to read about Castro while playing a game???
It just doesn’t make any sence. Just leave the phone in your hotel room next time.
Is there a symbol in chess notation now for “cellphone rang”?
