FIDE Today is Strong and Vibrant
FIDE President Kirsan Ilyumzhinov and Jorge Saggiante Garcia of Mexico City sign the contract for the 2007 World Championship Tournament during the Presidential Board Meeting in Al Ain, UAE assisted by GM Marcel Sisniega and FIDE Vice President Morten Sand.
The many bidders coming forward to FIDE signifies the great enthusiasm today to organize world chess events. Mexico City has a guaranteed prize fund of US $1.3 million for the World Chess Championship Tournament in October 2007.
With the support of their Prime Minister for the bid of Batumi, Georgia won over two other bidders to host the World Youth Championship 2006. Many of today`s Grandmasters started our in this event, such as incidentally GM Sisniega of Mexico in the photo above. The World Youth has grown to be a major developmental event in the FIDE Calendar, second in number of participants only to the Olympiad.
Six cities shall make their presentations in Turin for the 2010 Olympiad. Never before has there been so much interest to organize the Olympiad. Budva (SCG), Khanty Mansiysk (RUS), Poznan (POL), Riga (LAT), San Luis (ARG) and Tallinn (EST) shall present their bids to the FIDE Congress in Turin, Italy.
This year, FIDE President Kirsan Ilyumzhinov has personally guaranteed the $1M prize for the much awaited Topalov-Kramnik World Championship Match.
FIDE today is a strong and vibrant organization. 
Mexico has really stepped up for chess. Shame on the USCF! They have done nothing but kill the game we love.

the statement that Kirsan is going to guarantee the $1 million prize fund for the Kramnik Topalov match is not welcome by me. What happens if Kok wins the election and Kirsan is out. I dont think he is going to want to put up $1 million of his own money if he is out of FIDE.
Topolov did not do well in the Mexican half of Linares. I hope he does not mind the next WC being in Mexico.
As much as I look forward to the match, it seems a clever trick by Kirsan: Vote for me or else the world championship is off. (If you vote for me, then perhaps it’s on.)

Great news for Mexico and all we like chess here. I’ll be waiting until 2007 and go. Here in our contry there are not to many events and find them is hard and now we have a chance.
