Marshalltown and Ankeny once again shared state championship honors at the Iowa high school team chess championships, held March 31 at Prairie High School in Cedar Rapids. Both teams went 3-1 in the six-team field, with Marshalltown suffering a second-round loss for the second year in a row to Jefferson High of Cedar Rapids, then rebounding to hand Ankeny its only loss for the second year running.

Chuck Lierman’s Ankeny squad has claimed the title, or a share of it, for three years running with just four players. Former state championship finalist Brent Aronsen had a 3-1 mark, supporting Charles Li’s and Jack Hou’s perfect 4-0 marks on boards 2 and 3, with newcomer Kelsey Dixon chipping in with 1.5 point on board 4.
