Susan – thank you for the Boris Spassky video interview.Very nice to hear the views of a great champion and gentleman player. It was also good to hear him speak kindly of that phenomenal player – Bobby Fischer.
Amar
sad spassky…an isolated pawn if I ever saw one…he will never escape the Fischer shadow, even following the king’s craziness and demise
“From the living players I have a lot of respect to Vassily Ivanchuk. Probably because he is a little bit crazy.”
– Boris Spassky –
“Now I’m preparing myself to die very peacefully.”
– Boris Spassky –
“I said recently to Garry: ‘Garry if you come back to chess, I’m ready to be your coach. Gratis [for free]'”
.
.
.
“No chance. No chance to get him back, no.”
– Boris Spassky –
“Ocasionally I looked at my games which I played at age of 30, 40, 45 and looked my present games when I was 60 or 62 and I said: ‘Ohhh, I’m crazy…to play such a bad chess after showing such beautiful quality.’
So I think I stoped playing very late.
But Victor, you know Victor is a great fighter. It is his nature. He’s fighting, loses one, two, three games…he wins fourth and he is happy! So it’s very simple, you know. And very healthy approach also.”
– Boris Spassky –
“My best years were probably 60 to 70. 71 I was official champion of the world, but I was not the strongest already [anymore].”
– Boris Spassky –
“Botvinnik was 13 years a champion, but he was not the strongest. That was a FIDE champion, not a champion of the world. This is a difference between champion and FIDE champion.”
– Boris Spassky –
“Very fortunately for me I won two games when Garry was very young. And I lost two games when I was old and Garry was…just got a sence of maturity, you know…so he was very proud to eat my old meat.
.
.
.
So I felt eventually that to fight against Garry is not so simple business.”
– Boris Spassky –
“He [Karpov] was eating me like crocodile eating small animal.”
