The International Chess Tournament Sberbank Open Kicked Off In Kyiv Today

The international chess tournament Sberbank Open kicked off in Kyiv today. This tournament, the first of its kind in Ukraine, will be held in Kyiv between 3 and 8 June and hosted by the nation’s main sporting venue, Olimpiiskyi National Sports Complex. The tournament is organized by Sberbank of Russia JSC.

SBERBANK OPEN is included to the FIDE tournament calendar and the unified schedule of physical education, health-improvement and cultural events of the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine.

The program of this large-scale chess event includes three separate tournaments at once: (for international grandmasters, 5-8 June), B (children’s open, 3-8 June), and (for Sberbank of Russia Group employees, 6-8 June). Among participants of SBERBANK OPEN athletes from 11 countries: Ukraine, Russia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan, Bulgaria, Hungary, Austria, Germany, Turkey, and India.

The super-tournament will feature ten world-renowned stars: seven times world champion Anatoly Karpov (Russia), current world fast chess champion Sergei Kariakin (Russia), world champion Veselin Topalov (Bulgaria), the first world Fischer Random Chess champion and the world crown challenger Péter Lékó (Hungary), two-times Olympic champion Pavlo Elianov (Ukraine), European champion Yevgeniy Tomashevskyi (Russia), European champion within German national team Arkadij Naiditsch (Germany), champion of Ukraine Oleksandr Areshchenko, world youth championship runner-up Sergei Zhigalko (Belarus), and current champion of Ukraine Anton Korobov. The grandmasters will play a 9-round round-robin fast chess tournament.

The children’s open classical chess tournament B will feature almost 200 young chess players from Ukraine and other countries. Around 125 employees of Sberbank of Russia Group will participate in the fast chess tournament C.
