1) c4
ensuring that the game ends quickly
I don’t see the point of 1. c4.
After
1. g6 RxR (1…hxg 2. RxR)
2. g7
White’s g pawn cannot be stopped.
1.g6
1.Bb3
1. g6 RxR
2. g7 Rh6
3. Bf7 Ke7
4. Bh5 and only then does the pawn advance.

Anonymous,
after
1. g6 RxR
2. g7 Rh6
3. g8=Q+ is check
3…. K~7
4. Qg7+ and takes the rook as well
to be honest, i don’t see the importance of the given position’s pattern. the “trick” 1.g6! rxr 2.g7! to advance the pawn with check is enabled by the white pawn on c2! take this pawn away and black would have the defense 1.g6? rxa2! 2.g7? rg2+. does the pawn on c2 really belong to a pattern?
vohaul
I will take white’s position with the c-pawn removed. 1. g6 Rxa2 2. gxh 1-0
Susan: Did you get this idea from the famous Capablanca endgame where he also gave pawns up and rook to win with passed g pawn and king position on g5?
