Uganda: Ssegwanyi Wins Rwabushenyi

Kampala — International Master (IM) Arthur Ssegwanyi on Sunday regained the Rwabushenyi Memorial Chess men’s title after finishing one point ahead of Fide Master (FM) Harold Wanyama to cap a wonderful calendar year.

Ssegwanyi, who had lost the same crown to Wanyama before the event was moved from January, also defeated the latter in the sixth, of the eight-round tournament, on his way to the title.

He also won the Zone 4.2 Africa Chess Championship to qualify for the World Cup in Azerbaijan in September where he caused a stir in the first round by drawing the first game of his match against fourth-rated Dutchman Anish Giri.

It was, however, victory in the last round here against Kenyan Candidate Master (CM) Ben Magana that Ssegwanyi confirmed his triumph, collecting 7.5 points out of a possible eight after drawing the opener against Solomon Lubega. “The game took very long and he had limited time to make the best moves. So I trapped him with my queen towards the end and he fell for it,” Sssegwanyi said of his turning moment in the final round against Magana. The win guaranteed Ssegwanyi the winner’s top prize of Shs. 1m from sponsors Civil Aviation Authority after finishing ahead of Wanyama and IM Elijah Emojong, who finished on 1.5 points in third .

Phiona Mutesi won the ladies’ award at the event that also acted as the first phase of the Olympiad Qualifiers.
