CHENNAI: Business travellers, tourists, heads of state and now even chess champion Viswanathan Anand have all been grounded by the huge ash cloud from an Icelandic volcano that has turned the skies of northern Europe into a no-fly zone.

Anand, stranded in Frankfurt from Saturday along with his team, has asked the World Chess Federation to postpone his upcoming world chess championship match against Veselin Topalov of Bulgaria by at least three days. The match to be held in Sofia was scheduled to begin on April 23.

“We were due to arrive at 13.05 on April 16 by from Frankfurt to Sofia. We were in transit from Madrid… Unfortunately, from April 16, all flights have been cancelled,” Anand said in a statement. “If the airspace in Germany opens, we will fly to Sofia.”
