Chess Art at Reykjavík Art Museum
Iceland Review
Close to 20 original and unusual chessboards by a number of well-known contemporary artists will be on display in the exhibition “The Art of Chess” which opens at Reykjavík Art Museum – Kjarvalsstadir today.
The purpose is to shed a new light on the rules of chess and the basic thought behind conventional chessboards. Today, a family exhibition in relation to “The Art of Chess” will also open where people can make their own original chessboards and play with them.
While the exhibition is running, the museum will organize various events in relation to chess, some of which the Icelandic Chess Federation and the Reykjavík Chess Academy participate in.
The first event takes place tomorrow, January 25.
At 2 pm, some of the participating artists, Gavin Turk, Oliver Clegg and Paul Fryer, along with one of the curators Julia Royse, will observe the chessboards with visitors to the exhibition.
Afterwards, at 3 pm, the other conductors, Mark Sanders and Larry List, will participate in a panel discussion on chess with Hafthór Yngvason, director of the museum.
The exhibition runs through April 13. Admission is free.
