Do you love to play chess? Maybe you’re interested in just learning how to play. Maybe you want someone to play competitively with. The Idaho State University chess club is welcoming potential new members.

The club meets on Fridays from 2- 5 p.m. each week. Meetings are held in the Pond Student Union Building near the Canoe Room.

“This year has been the most active year for the chess club since I’ve been here,” said club president Greg Fenchel. Fenchel began playing chess at the age of eight.

“I didn’t get serious until my freshman year of high school,” he said. Fenchel joined the chess club in the spring of his freshman year.

Club vice president Sean Vander Sys began playing the game in sixth grade. “I didn’t start playing competitively until eighth or ninth grade,” he said. Vander Sys didn’t join the chess club until his sophomore year, as the club was somewhat inactive.

Why would someone be interested in playing chess? “I think chess is a really great game. You learn to approach problems in different ways,” said Fenchel.

For Vander Sys, a political science major, real world application is important. “When you play chess, you develop analytical skills,” he said. “It also takes strategy.”
