SPRINGFIELD – Richard I. Chang is probably not going to win his third Western Massachusetts and Connecticut Valley Chess Championship’s trophy today.

“I’m not in good playing strength this year,” Chang, 39, of South Windsor, Conn., said yesterday at the 82nd Western Massachusetts and Connecticut Valley chess championship.

The event being held at American International College this weekend is the oldest trophy chess tournament in the country.

Chang, who runs a chess club in his town’s public library, has won the tournament twice.

“I started learning chess in high school. In college, I wasn’t really interested. I started working, got busy trying to establish myself, and then one day when I was just really bored, I remembered I like chess.”

He’s been coming to the tournament ever since, he said.
