“…I play hundreds of games of chess against my computer and only beat it when it makes stupid mistakes…“

Alan Alda played Hawkeye Pierce for eleven years in the television series M*A*S*H and has acted in, written, and directed many feature films. He has starred often on Broadway, and his avid interest in science has led to his hosting PBS’s Scientific American Frontiers for eleven years. He was nominated for an Academy Award in 2005 and has been nominated for thirty-one (and has won five) Emmy Awards.

Very cool to know that Alan is playing chess 🙂
Alan Alda is a great American actor. I’ve read his books. His accomplishments prove that most anyone that apply themselves can succeed.
I think chess helped him a lot.
but about the question of “time…” what is it exactly? Is it merely a question for physicists or philosophers?
He’s a great American and a talented professional. As a American born in Europe it sickens me to hear and read some Europeans’ say that America has no “culture.”
Well…since I’m both I can say that if there is a God…I 100% agree with the words of the American president Lincoln who once said that America is “the last best hope for the Earth.”
Though I am European by birth…there exists no country in Europe that is or can ever be as America is…the last best hope for the earth. If it weren’t for America…I’d still be living under the evil cloud of communism.
I’ll not respond to any comments to this post. Europe needs new leaders…pro-American. What is there to fear? Europeans “hate” the U.S. but want to come here. A fact I never understood since when I left europe I never…not a single time…regretted it. I’m proud to be an American citizen.
I’m proud we have great talents such as Alda.
…I have played thousands of games of chess against my computer and only beat it when I unplug it and toss it in the fish tank.
democracy will fail when the majority distorts it merely for their own gain
Actually Alan Alba said this in the comentary “I waste plenty of time during the day. I play hundreds of games of chess against my computer and only beat it when it makes stupid mistakes, which is a complete waste of time. But the oatmeal part of my day is the only …”
It seems that playing chess against computer for him is waste of time.
Anon of 3.41am – the server never sleeps – has it right. The fuller text is:
“I waste plenty of time during the day. I play hundreds of games of chess against my computer and only beat it when it makes stupid mistakes, which is a complete waste of time.”
I think PT-SP are doing a bit of selective quoting here.
My advice to AA is to turn the wick down on your chess engine. Mine is on ‘very easy’ and I sometimes win.
A lot of Americans live in Europe because they prefer the lifestyle. A lot of Europeans live in the US or would like to. But if the doors were wide open many Europeans would not leave Europe and many Americans would not leave the US.
Personally, I think the US is a great country, I like to visit, but I’d never want to live there.
Spreading democracy around the world sounds ominously similar
to spreading communism around the world.
The US *in theory* does have more freedom, but since most americans support the government’s effort to curtail it — doesn’t quite work out being a ‘free’ country.
Perhaps, it really is a *better country* in theory, but how can it be when the people are so complacent and Fox News is the #1 news channel. 24 is also the #1 show – followed closely by American Idol.
Qute a superior country..
I very recently read that Alda “nearly died” in 2004. What happened?
Alda’s performance in the final season of The West Wing was the complete opposite of television’s usual “vast wasteland” mode.
