POPLAR GROVE — Chess is not a basic game, but Robyn McDonald coaches her students to stick to the basics to be successful.
“Just play the board,” she says. “Don’t worry about your opponent and what rating you think they have.”
The advice paid off for the group of homeschool kids she coaches along with Romero Bennett. Their team, Hallstrom Homeschool Workshop, took first in the 6-8 grade division and second in K-5 at North Boone’s ninth annual Invitational Chess Tournament.
The tournament, held Saturday at North Boone Middle School in Poplar Grove, brought together 60 students from 13 teams representing Ralston Elementary School, Hallstrom, Christian Life, Loves Park Elementary, Capron Elementary, North Boone Upper Elementary, Rockford Environmental Science Academy, Manchester Elementary and North Boone Middle School.
