Review from Video Librarian Publication
The Video Review Magazine for Libraries
Produced and hosted by the renowned chess grandmaster Susan Polgar (who has won multiple World Championships and Olympic Gold medals), Learning Chess the Easy Way is a fun and informative introduction to the game.
Animated chess pieces King Harold and Champion the Knight help Polgar guide viewers through basic information (learning about the chess board, the pieces and their respective movements, rules of the games, etc.), before tackling more complex concepts of strategy, such as trying to anticipate an opponent’s moves.
Also included are a brief history of chess, a biography of Polgar, and “Fun Facts” about the game.
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED! 3.5 stars / 4
This DVD is recommended for young people age 4 and up. It was released earlier this year and it has been completely sold out. The second edition with captions in English, Spanish, French and German will be available in a few days! You can view a sample clip of the video here.
I highly recommend this DVD.
While on a business trip to NY I visited the Polgar Chess Club and Susan gave me a copy of this DVD for my daughter.
Every day I go over a little bit of chess with my daughter and one day she amazed me with what she told me. We were about to start learning how the rooks move when she repeated, just as it was in the video, how rooks move and capture other pieces.
When I asked my daughter how she knew this, as we had not gone over rooks yet, she told me: “The lady in the TV taught me”.
So I learned two valuable lessons here – (1) Susan’s videos are really geared to even young chess heads, and (2) kids absorb everything around them 🙂
Keep up the great work Susan!
My son who is 6 LOVES this video. He watches this before he would watch Barney or Mr. Wiggles. I highly recommend this DVD too! The best!
3.5??
4.0 all the way!!!
This looks like fine DVD!
In the promotional clip, the announcer describes you as “the best female chess player ever to play the game.” Don’t let your sister hear that!
That’s just a small quibble, Susan–I have enormous respect for your playing, and for all you do to promote the game. (Great coverage of the Kramnik-Topalov match, too!)
