Heviz to host chess tournament in Bobby Fischer’s memory

Tuesday, 11 March 2008

An international chess tournament dedicated to Bobby Fischer (1943-2008), will be held in the spa town of Heviz from March 18 to 28.

Fischer, the only U.S. player to win the world champion’s title, is said to have been of Hungarian origin on his father’s side and spent about seven years in Budapest in the 1990s.

The ten-round tournament will feature six players with an average Elo score of 2645, the strongest field to gather in Hungary since 2003.

Participants:

Liviu-Dieter Nisipeanu (ROM, 2684), Francisco Vallejo Pons (ESP, 2675), Zoltan Almasi (HUN, 2667), Arkadi Naiditsch (GER, 2638), Victor Mikhalevski (2632, ISR), Csaba Balogh (HUN, 2575).

The players agreed not to offer a draw until the 30th move as another way to pay tribute to Fischer, who only accepted such offers as a last resort.
