Harper wins Chess designer trophy

National chess champion Ryan Harper emerged victorious at yesterday’s open tournament to take home the special collector’s item trophy designed by Kemal C Manickchand. The 7th Indian Arrival Day chess tournament, held at the Ato Boldon Stadium in Couva, attracted over one hundred players. There was a tie for second place in the Open category between Dev Soondarsingh of the Paladins Chess Club, Port-of-Spain and Rohan Heerah of Southern Chess Club, San Fernando. Harper is from the Kings and Queens Chess Club of Arima.

The tournament was sponsored by Kemal Design Studio which is owned and operated by Manickchand. The opening ceremony was also attended by Member of Parliament for Couva South, Rudranath Indarsingh, who congratulated the Central Vikings Club host of the tournament, pledged to support future ventures of the club for the development of the sport of chess in Central Trinidad. Several Junior national champions competed in the tournament and also emerged victorious in their categories. These included Javanna Smith who won the Under Female 20 trophy, Rishon Ramlogan who took the Under 12 boys trophy and Della Marie Walcott who took the Under 10 girls trophy.

Other first place winners included four Central Vikings players: Darrien de Silva, Under 20 men; Najarah Muhammed, Under 14 girls, Shannon Yearwood, Under 12 girls; Sean Yearwood, Under 10 boys and Varendra Sookram, Junior Novice boys. Among the other first place winners were also Matthew Wong Sang, Under 14 boys; Ornela Roberts, Junior Novice girls; D’Neil Baboolal, Novice boys and Rebecca Tom Pack, Novice girls.
