Happy Wanderers as chess team secure their promotion
Apr 22 2009 by Lynda Nicol, East Kilbride News
A FEW years ago East Kilbride Chess Club was invited into the Dunbartonshire League.
Going in under the name of East Kilbride Wanderers, the team is made up of a pool of all East Kilbride chess members.
They have now “wandered” their way to promotion by winning the 2008-2009 Dumbarton and District Division 2 title.
Delighted team captain,Paul Denham said that all the members deserve credit for their efforts over the season.
He continued: “The team were unbeaten, going into the last match where we needed at least a draw for the title, so I picked Alan Jelfs, Craig Miller, Frankie Murray and Tony Dunlop, four of our strongest players.
“After losing the first two games, it was looking precarious. But we fought back and got the draw we needed.”
Paul added: “A local engraver is going to be busy, as a total of 15 club members played one or more games for the Wanderers”.

Very cool name Happy Wanderers!
Thanks Anonymous.
The name came about before I captained the side and reflects the fact that though we are based in one county we play in 3 leagues and this league is located about 3 counties (and 20 miles away!).
We have a B team this season and its being called the East Kilbride Rovers.
I had wanted to call them EK Wonderers but we felt there would be too much confusion for other teams to have EK Wanderers and EK Wonderers.

PS Little known EK fact … David Bronstein played in the East Kilbride Congress one year in the early 1990’s.
