Commentary is missed!
Grischuk is winning the endgame!! But he plays impatient and checks on e4 for no reason. And Anand is not playing the best moves either. White should win this.
Kramnik again went for a win with Black and is beating Gelfand, what a round this could be!! But in these semi-slav/QGA positions it always seems like White can just dissolve the queenside and it’s a boring rook draw. If he tries too hard to win he will lose and Kramnik may be only 0,5 points out of first…
Sorry for an anonymous opinion, forgot my name…
-Ken
p.s. While I am typing Gelfand did the smart thing and forced a draw. Nice try by Kramnik but he will now be at least 1 full point out of first place. I may root for Gelfand to ensure Kramnik regains his title in the match.
Hey Ken, It’s funny that you are criticizing moves made by the worlds top players?
What’s your rating 1200?
2512 last published now at about 2504.
And if lesser players could not critique the games of the top players who would ever annotate them? Or write opening books involving their systems? Much easier to see the right moves with no pressure and no one watching over my shoulder!
So far my comments here have pretty much borne out during GM Marin’s commentary on the following days so I have no problems pitching out comments, no.
As a struggling intermediate player I ALWAYS enjoy the critiquing of moves by the kibbutzers. I may not know how much credibility to give them but they usually help me to think about the position. It’s a bonus when someone volunteers information about their own playing strength.
I just hope people always feel comfortable throwing out their opinions. I like seeing them.

Whoops! So much for Anonymous’ ad verecundiam fallacy.
Looks like a draw to me.
If an anonymous guy says it’s a draw for reasons he can’t explain, that’s good enough for me.
So are you saying you are Rohde, Michael
41 Krush, Irina NY USA 2516
42 Schneider, Dmitry NY USA 2515
43 Rohde, Michael A NY USA 2512
44 Foygel, Igor MA USA 2510
Anond will loose because russia school chess is the best!!! Go Gelfand!!!
All anon bloggers are afraid to reveal their identity because they are overrated.
Wonderful Grishuk!!!
The game is soon ending and Anand can not escape defeat now!!!
is this a win for white? can he catch the h pawn after promotion? I think his king might be too far, I don’t have a chess board and find it difficult to calculate. Can anyone say what the engines say?
I think that Anand just saved it again! what a defensive player! he has become a stronger defensive player then Kramnik I think..
Hey, where are you watching the games and getting updates?
So far, the only site I’ve found to view them as they are taking place is http://en.chessfish.com/live/
Anybody have a better suggestion?
And btw, Go Vishy!!! Yay!!
Maybe your site is better but I like:

“Maybe your site is better but I like:

Just tried it — yes that’s just as good.
Hey, Anand got the draw! Whew Who!
i think grishuk missed winning pe if instead of kb6 he moved kb7 ut maybe from before, what a miracolous escape from the next world c aahmpiom. How did he ever manage to get to a worse posiont in the mddle of the game can anyone explaon??
if all the last kra, ge and anan would of made 9pts how would they decide the ch, or in this cas tomoro ana an gel 8.5 each??
how do tiebreaks work out, krmnik reacted to late!
Is there a suggestion we’re getting more photographs here and less chess?………

—> Strange analysis. Kramnik usually says, when he got a draw with Black, that he is very happy with the result… He goes rarely for a win with White, and far more rarely with Black.
Moreover, Kramnik was never better in his game against Gelfand, who did all the work to try to postpone the draw…

Grischuk made the crucial strategic mistake far earlier.
Instead of 34. Kc2 which transposed to the rook endgame with highly drawish character he should have played 34.Rc2 leading to a knight endgame which looks much less drawish:
33…Rc6 34.Rc2 Ne5 35.Rxc3 Rxc3+ 36.Nxc3 Nd3+ 37.Kd2 Nxf2 38.Ke3 Ng4+ 39.Kf4 Nf6 40.Nb5 a6 41.Nd6 Ke7 42.Nf5+ Ke6 43.Nxh6.
In the end, of course the draw was achieved by 56.Kd5?, blocking fifth horizontal and allowin the black king to go forward along with the pawns.

Uh, oh, nice analysis…
above analysis is stolen from Shipov’s live commentary.
SHAME on you!!!
I highly recommend GM Shipov’s live analysis of the games. It’s in russian of course, but you can always translate it online.
Susan nowadays gives us only pictures 🙁
sigh…

Go Grischuk!! You managed to save a draw a pawn up against future World Champion Vishy!! Why did you give a free Rook for only a pawn on your last move??
And – who is Shipov? (about the stolen analysis) Another guy using Zappa to annotate games??
Leroidavid: how can u lough at russian chess school?
First of all 6 of the 8 players here are ex-soviet union (that makes it 75% of the players, u know) while Anand is the WC, he is still an exception.
Second, although the last 3 places here are taken by Russians, u should not forget that those are places 6-8 in the wolrd(!) so I wouldn’t underestimate it.
And last, we can’t ignore Kramnik is still russian, and former greatest champions of all times: Kasparov & Karpov were Russians..
why does grischuk always seem disinterested. maybe hes thinking about poker. thats mainly all i play nowadays. so much money in poker.
Yeah, I’d fine Grishy another 1000 US for giving a free rook. A bad example for all children watching.
Sadly for US Americans, US$1000 isn’t worth much anymore. You should fine him 1000 Euros!
we are missing the online commentary on this blog.
where did u find Grischuk winning the game ?
What was the mistake done by him ?
I checked on following url for game analysis and believe me it was showing as draw for long time.
you can do the endgame analysis on following url:

Hi,
concerning the greatest champions of the chess. It was Morphy,Steinitz, Lasker, Capablanca, Fischer, Tal. They were not Russians for sure. Even mentioned Kasparov has been Armenian :-).
The russian chess school is based on Chigorin and Alechin. Kramnik style of play is far from that.
The name Drawnik has the point.

I’m disappointed with Susan.
She is giving us a photo-blog
when all we wanted was annotated live games!
A case of mistaken priorities, perhaps?!

Um — Susan’s not at home at her computer, she’s in Mexico with her camera. Duh! The pictures are great.
Regarding the greatest champions again: first of all, Tal was russian, second, u don’t decide which kind of russian school was mentioned here, Kramnik studied chess in Botvinnik’s chess school in Russia (can u get more russian chess school then that?).
But most importantly, it is obvious that Kasparov is the greatest champion of all time and not the list u gave, one way to measure it is explained in this site: http://db.chessmetrics.com/CM2/PeakList.asp?Params=199510SSSSSWS000000000000111000000000000010100
Were u can see that Karpov is #2 in all time greats.
A lot of these rating site are biased towards russian players !
Looking at the statistics it is obvious who is the better player between Kramnik and Anand or for that matter any of the current players. Even FIDE and PCA are biased towards russians players. I find it annoying that they give topolov and Kramnik multiple chances at the WC eventhough Anand has proved to be better than both of them !
Hi,
Tal was born in Ryga, it is not Russia for sure.:-). It is in country conquered by Russia during 2nd world war.
Kasparov before going to Botwinnik school were trained in Baku. If we compare the style of playing Kasparov and Botwinnik the big difference is obvious.
In my opinon and not only mine the greatest WCC has been RJ Fischer.
None of the K-K pair has won pretenders matches 6:0,6:0, 6.5:2,5
the last one vs iron Tigran Petrosjan – Armenian. Fischers opponents were not only players but the team of soviet GM which were helping the Fischer opponets during the pretender matches.
I count Petrosjan and Kasparov as the members of the Armenian chess school.
The Armenian team is the WCCT.
