Bradford’s chess champion has joined a select group after his prowess was recognised by the World Chess Federation which has made him a master.

Winston Williams, who won the Bradford Open Individual Championship title for the second time this year, described being awarded the accolade as a “great satisfaction” after battling his way through countless matches at a local and county level.

Mr Williams, 53, of Manningham, first joined the Bingley Chess Club in 2004 after returning from his job teaching English and maths in South Korea and west Africa.

Mr Williams believes there are only about 100 chess masters of his level in the country and knows of only one other in the district.

He said: “It was certainly something I was very much looking forward to receiving in recognition of all the hard work.”
