1. … Be7
2. Nb7 Qg1
3. Qc2 Qh1+
4. Qh2 Qxb7
wins a piece
1… Qg1 right away doesn’t quite work:
2. Qc2 Qh1+
3. Qh2 Qd1
(simultaneously threatening …Qg4# and …Qxd8)
4. Qb2+ Kg8
5. Kh2 (or Nb7) saves it for white.
Black’s bishop can attack White’s Knight (Be7).
Not sure. 1…Be7 intending …Qg1 (as advocated by aam and Indrajit Sen Gupta) can be met by 2.Nb7 Qg1 3.Qc6.
1 … Bc3+!
2.Qxc3 Qxd8
and black controls all.
If white queen doesn’t take Bishop on c3, immediate mate awaits the hapless king.
Actually the aim is to find a way to make aam’s line work. Still there’s the simple reply Qc3+, which frees White position.
… which is Ba5.
Bc5 threatens Bg1 followed by Qf2 etc. After Bc5 white Q cannot defend second row or it loses K.
1. …Qg1
2.Qc2 Qh1+
3.Qh2 Qd5
4.Qb2 Ba5
5.Nb7 Qh1+ wins a piece
Oh no Qb7 saves in my line
How about 1.Ba5 Nb7 2.Qa6!?.
1.. Ba5
2. Nb7 (1.Nc6? Qg1)
2. .. Qa6!
kind of zugzwang
e.g.
3. Qb8 Qg1 0-1
or
3. Qc5 Qxb7
4. Qxa5 Qh1#
or
3. Qd7 Qf1+
4. Kh2 Bb6
5. Qd2 Bg1+
6. Kh1 Bf2+
7. Kg2 Qg1+
8. Kh3 Qh1#
That’s funny, while typing the solution someone also suggested the winning move 2.. Qa6!
Well done!
Consul, after
1… Be7
2. Qc3+ Bf6
still wins for black, right?
Irrelevant moves and question aam, the solution has already been given right above your comment, and it’s a forced convincing line.
Anon (Saturday, November 7, 2009 2:01:00 PM CST):
I believe the solution I gave (the first one in these comments) wins as well.
1. Be7, 2. Qc3 is _not_ a refutation because of 2… Bf6. White cannot simultaneously save the mate on h1 and the N on d8.
If there is a hole in the analysis, I’m genuinely interested in learning about it.
OK, I’m sorry, apperently you’re serious, so I took a glance at your line.
It’s not difficult to improve on this line.
1. .. Be7?
2. Nb7 Qg1
3. Qc6
and there’s nothing wrong with white’s position.
