Armenian Levon Aronian, Russians Alexander Grischuk and Alexei Shirov and Spaniard Sergey Kariakin are taking part in the tournament. Bulgarian Topalov will not be present as he is preparing his world final before Anand.

Bilbao will hold, from 6th to 12th of September, the II Gran Slam Chess Final. The so-called Plaza Nueva, in the heart of the Bilbao’s old quarter, is hosting the tournament.

The four players visiting the city in the second edition of the final are Levon Aronian, Alexander Grischuk, Alexei Shirov and Sergey Kariakin. Bulgarian Veselin Topalov will not be present as he is preparing his world final before Anand.

The Final Masters has the official recognition of the International Chess Federation (FIDE) and it will be played in a double round robin league during six days (plus a free day).

Pedestrians will be able to follow the games live, given that a huge soundproofed and air-conditioned crystal case, located in the Plaza Nueva, is under construction.

As in 2008’s edition, there will be a marquee hosting El Agora, a place for analysis and comments located by the glass case. The audience will also be able to enjoy Chess Grandmasters’ comments.

El Agora will be under the direction of journalist Leontxo Garcia with the cooperation of Nicola Lococo. Tables and chairs arranged in a street cafe style will help to follow the chess games in a collective, dynamic, open and participating way.

As part of the tournament, many activities connected to chess have been scheduled.
