Grand Masters share lead after Day II

KATHMANDU: Three Grand Masters (GM) —Saidali Iuldachev, Georgy Timoshenko and Georg Mohr — shared the lead after the completion of third round of the Himalayan Grand Master International Chess Tournament here today.

The trio collected maximum three points. Uzbekistan GM Iuldachev defeated Indian International Master (IM) Himanshu Sharma in the second round before defeating another Indian FIDE Master (FM) Akshat Khamparia in the third. Ukraine GM Timoshenko overcame British IM Ian Thomas and Uzbekistan’s GM Dzhumaev Marat in the second and third round respectively.

Likewise, Slovenian GM Mohr cruised past Indian IM Atanu Lahiri and a Bangladeshi FM Mehdi Hasan to share lead.

GM Sriram Jha, IM duo Saptarshi Roy and Venkatesh MR, all from India, along with FM Javed Mohammad of Bangladesh trailed the leaders on second spot with 2.5 points each.

Roy defeated former Nepal champion Balram Napit and compatriot Pratink Roy, while Mohammed dispatched Nepali duo Lava Kumar Shrestha and Uttam Raj Thapa.
