This is the take of GM Baburin about the July FIDE rating list:
The trouble with omitting Foros is that FIDE broke its own rules on several occasions in the past (i.e. for Linares). I am not calling on FIDE to break rules again – I think that FIDE should set a different deadline for submitting tournaments for rating – the current period of 15 days is ridiculous in this day and age – do chess organisers deliver tournament cross-tables using horses? Do FIDE guys calculate them using pen and paper? Hardly… With e-mail and computer calculations something like 2 days would be a reasonable deadline – and then FIDE should make no exceptions!
This may sound like a theoretical dispute for some chess fans, but for the chess pros affected it could mean serious loss (or gain) of income! If you have an opinion on these matters and would like to share it with other CT readers, drop me a note to ababurin@iol.ie.
What’s there to debate about. Gm Baburin is correct. We’re not living in the 60’s anymore and information transmits instantly. 15 days is a little long and Baburuns 2 day suggestion makes sense and allows time for any revision that might crop up.
Fide really seems to be a little um….broken. The WCC qualifications..the actual WCC matches…etc..are all being handled in a second rate fashion..
Absolutely agree, 15 days is ridiculous. Something like two or three days sounds reasonable. Plus, there should not be any exception. Probably never gonna happen under the FIDE regime as they like to change rules to whatever suits them best…
ELO points are just EGO points. You’re not a better or worse player in 2 weeks time.
Rating is overrated! You can stare at the mirror all they admiring yourself, but in the end you have to perform, and you better enjoy that!
they=day of course, that was stupid.
Also totally agree.
FIDE is completely incompetent as is also shown by their mis-managing of the World Championship Cycles since 1993.
IMO chessfans are already more interested in the online Live-Ratinglist than in the official FIDE list
I agree also….no more horse-drawn mail, or pen and paper calculations…we are in the information age with computers and the internet. Very true.
I rather look at games than ratings!
Baburin is ofcourse, incorrect in blogging, for personal gains, instead of going through proper FIDE channels. I would not be surprised if the Ethics Commission gets him on this one.
As long as they make the deadline strict it doesn’t really matter- in fact I think that they should go by elephant even if it takes them an extra week. They can only make exceptions if the tournament organizer doesn’t have enough elephants to carry all the results game by game.
Why should blogging be a crime against FIDE Ethics?
It is precisely discussions of this sort that make organizations interesting and current. You can keep it all secret and then assemble a task force under a gag order to discuss why no one is interested in your chess organization!
You reap as you sow.
‘Why should blogging be a crime against FIDE Ethics?’
Because some posts are psychopathically oriented.
‘why no one is interested in your chess organization!’
Is that why Ms Polgar, like Mr. Baburin are active member of FIDE inside at least one Commission?
Ignorant post of you, isn’t it?
All FIDE people deserve to be fired (in my humble opinion), including members of the Ethics Commission. (Please do not ask to provide arguments, this topic deserves a book. Just go and read what people write about the FIDE achievements everywhere).. Then we will have a chance to have something sensible.
P.S. Afromeev, 2646, is still on the rating list – he is Russian #18 active player, actually. What ethics we speak about?
There is no excuse not to include the most up-to-date ratings for all players and do it on a monthly basis rather than quarterly.
The computer are wonderful tool. Kirsan should learn how to use one.
