GIRLS at Doncaster Gardens Primary School are kings of the castles and rooks and pawns.

The school hosted the first girls-only division of the Chess Kids National Interschool Championships. Young champions from schools across the region came to make their moves.

Chess Kids competition founder David Cordover said the special division was created to encourage more girls to take part in the game.

“Recently we conducted national research and found that in 60 per cent of chess programs boys outnumbered girls,” Mr Cordover said.
