Too easy! …Nc3. bxN Ba3. Mate to follow
Qxg1 Rxg1 Rxe4
Oops, small tweener overlooked. …Nc3+, pxN QxQ, RxQ Ba3 is more forcing.
Very elegant!
All White moves are pretty much forced.
1. … Nc3+!!
2. bxc3 Qxe3!
3. Rxe3 Ba3
4. Re8+ Rxe8
5. Rd1 Rxd1
6. Rxc1+#
1. … Nc3+
2. bxc3 Ba3 leading to win for black.
Thematic mate — nice but rather easy.
1. … Nc3+ 2. bxc3 (a. 2. Ka1 Rxc1+ 3. Qxc1 Qxc1#; b. 2. Qxc3 Rxc1#) Ba3 3. Qxg1 Rxg1 and checkmate on c1 is inevitable. 1-0
Very interesting.
1….. Nc3+
2.bxc3
If 2.Qxc3
Not 2….. Rxc3?
3Rd8+ Bxd8
4.Re8#
But 2.Rxc1#
2…… Qxe3
3.Rxe3 Ba3
Now mate can not be prevented
1. … Nc3+!
2. Bxc3 (Ka1 Rxc1+, Qxc3 Rxc1#)
2. … Ba3!
And there is no protection of the pinned Bc1, only sacks Re1 and Rd1 to delay, Rxc1 Qxc1 Qxc1# will follow.
Rc8 must stay completely out of this.
Quite pretty, and for me, hard to find. Indeed, I didn’t even look at 1. …Nc3 until the anonymous commenter stated it was a thematic mate. I only had eyes for Qxe3, which wins convincingly, but by using the same theme later in the line:
1. …..Qe3
2. Re3 Nc3
Forking the other rook instead…
3. Rc3
Or, if 3.ab3, black will mate starting with 3. …Ba3. Continuing:
3. …..Rc3!
And white still can’t take at c3 without allowing the mate.
Of course, black does even better by playing 1. …Nc3 immediately since the mate can’t now be avoided.
Joshua,It is Black to move, not white to move!
1……Nc3+
2.bxc3.Qxe3 1-0 threatening
3.Rxe3.Ba3
4……Rxc1#
Black has no worthwhile defense; he can only delay the mate.
Harry
Can you start letting us know what the last move played was?
Dear Yancey,
I am not convinced about your variation.
1…. Qxe3
2Rxe3 Nc3+
3.Rxc3 Rxc3
4.bxc3 Ba3
5.Rd8+ black seems to be in trouble.
Am I missing something?
You are correct, S.G. Bhat, though it took me a while to figure out what I had wrong. I had black’s king on g8 instead of h8 when I did the analysis.
